I have worked with quite a bit of clients who used to experience Anxiety and one thing that I have found most in common with almost all of them is what Anxiety means to them. Most people when thinking about Anxiety, think of it as a horrible “thing” that has developed over time and has taken over their minds and their bodies to the point that there is no return unless they use a prescription drug.
When closely interviewing my clients and asking them whether they feel they have any control over it, the majority said “No.” The reason why most do not believe that they can just ‘tell it to go away’ is because most people have come to believe that Anxiety is:
a genetic problem
a biological imbalance of brain chemicals
and caused by traumatic events from the past that cannot be changed.
Plus, once it has transformed into a physical equivalent, like heart attacks, stokes, high cholesterol, cancers, and more, it seems impossible to say that it is all the head.
So, the first thing that I tell my clients is “TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND RELAX, BECAUSE IT’S ACTUALLY EASIER TO GET RID OF THAN YOU THINK!”
What’s important to understand is that our “subconscious” minds don’t know the difference between what is real and what is fake. So even if we start thinking about things that are not real, like the worst case scenario of a future event, our bodies will still react biochemically as if it is real. So all those things that people think cause anxiety, like chemical imbalances, are nothing but symptoms.
Few tips for getting rid of Anxiety:
- The most important thing to realize about Anxiety is that even though it may seem like a “THING” that has taken over your mind and body, it is still a PROCESS that YOU are doing. So the next time you feel it coming over you, put some positive pictures in your head, tell yourself positive things, stand up straight and put a smile on your face, and you will notice how different you feel.
